District 18 Congressional Forum @ Rice - February 22, 2010

Houston Enriches Rice Education (HERE) is hosting a Discussion Forum for the District 18 Congressional candidates. This is not a debate! Our aim is to educate on the issues of District 18 and the larger Houston area. Jarvis Johnson and Sean A. Roberts attendance is confirmed. Sheila Jackson Lee's attendance is pending her Congressional schedule.

Where do the candidates stand on Health Care Reform, Education, Unemployment, Job Creation?

This blog was created to capture your questions for our moderator to ask the candidates. What do you want to know?

  1. My question is on education. I'd like the candidates to be asked about their commitment and ideas to fund Early Education and After School programs. Both of these are critical to our childrens future.

  3. I remain helpful that we will have some sort of health care reform legislation passed during this presidential administration. What are the candidates' views on improvements to federally funded or federally subsidized community based health care facilities as well as additional loan forgiveness funding to support physicians and other health care professionals who want to work in these facilities that are often located in underserved communities.

  5. What do you see as the most urgent need for your district and what are your plans to address it?

  6. How will the candidates revolutionize education? Action must be taken because I believe today's school are not preparing students for higher education past high school. Should failing students be allowed to attend summer school for FREE? Or should a penalty be imposed on them because they did not do their business. How will we identify those students who are trying to pass, but just don't get the material?

  7. Many small contractors continue to struggle to survive despite the many divisions that have been created over the years to prevent them from being shut-out. Do you feel changing how small business are categorized will be better served if a new level is implemented - such as creating a micro small business category from 1 to 15 employees, and small business from 16 up?

  9. Congress has embraced the school voucher model at the university level with Pell Grants and the HOPE scholarship and Lifetime Learning Credit. Would you also support k-12 school vouchers for Washington, DC, youth?

  10. I see mention of the 3 Democrat candidates but no mention of the 3 Republican candidates. Have the 3 Republicans been invited to speak as well?

  11. I'd like to know why the Republicans aren't being given an opportunity to share their views during the forum. Seems unfair and biased...

  12. What parts of Obama's health care bill do they agree or disagree with? Why?

  13. A bill HR 868 enhancement of wages for Direct Care Professionals has not been cosponsored by any US Representatives from Harris County. In fact of the 32 Texas representatives only 2 in the state of Texas has cosponsored this bipartisan bill. This is the seventh year the bill in some form has been in existance. Is it Direct Care or Don't Care from our US Reps? Also since Texas is first in economic development why are we 49th when it comes to services/funding for those with Intellectual Developmental Disablities? Is this something to be proud of? I see no mention of IDD in any campaign mailouts. When will we see improved change in Texas for individuals and families affected by IDD.

  14. I would like to know how each candidate will address the high HIV/AIDS rates and what steps will they take to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS? What funding will each candidate spend on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention? How will each candidate assist grassroot organizations and social marketing strategies fight the spread of HIV/AIDS?
